Strategic Target Name: Implementation of energy-efficient, data freshness-based semantic communication technologies that will ensure the scalability of Internet of Things- based smart urban technology applications, at a pilot level by 2024, by increasing them to TRL 6 level.

Field of Activity of the Project: Information and Communication Technologies, Internet of Things, Wireless Communication, Communication Networks

Project Summary: Scalably supporting the growth in the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the main carriers of digitalization and autonomy in sustainable urban technologies, requires end-to-end design of communication systems and networks, starting from the foundation. For the success of the perception-calculation-action cycle in applications such as environmental monitoring, autonomous air/land/sea vehicles, location tracking, it is essential that the right information is sampled at the right time and brought to the place where it is needed on time. A new concept called "semantic communication" has been defined to convey the necessary information at the right time. One of the simplest, quantitative and concrete examples of semantic communication is Age- aware communication.

The main purpose of the project is to transfer these new technologies, which have been brought to TRL 3 level in our research, to the industry. Since semantic communication techniques are not expected to be implemented in the mMTC and URLLC modes of the 5th generation communication systems (5G), the goal of our project is to make a timely and major impact on the 6th generation communication systems, referred to as 6G, which have not yet started to develop. The widespread impact of the project is to provide both energy savings and a reduction in traffic, as IoT nodes achieve the same level of freshness with lower average activity, preventing bottlenecks on the Internet. In other words, the impact of the project is a more sustainable IoT technology in terms of energy consumption and bandwidth in network infrastructures.
